Managing Classroom Behavior

Poor study skills and inappropriate classroom behavior are some of the things you have to deal with when you are a teacher. Growing up also involves having some behavior issues for most children. For some, it is more severe than others. Special kids can be separated from the regular ones from their behavior. Let’s look at several ways you can manage classroom behavior.

Create behavior expectations and spell them out to the students. At the start of every school year tell the students what you expect. As from the first day of school come up with rules that will guide the class. Go through the rules together with the students and make it a tradition in the classroom. Create signs that become warning signs if someone is in the wrong. Monitor the students to see if they are following the rules.

Keep on checking if anyone has had any adverse reaction and offered them feedback. If you have a student who is continuously having lousy behavior keep a close eye on them and also avoid it at an early stage. Use severe voice and gestures to remind a student who is involved in bad behavior. Rewarding ethical behavior is something you should always do in a classroom.

Reinforcement such us social, exercise, physical, consumable and harmful strengthening should be applied in making sure that the rules are followed. Tokens can be used to reward good behavior instead of using tangible rewards. The symbols can be used later to backup reinforcement. If the students are more advanced in age you should use contingency contracts. These types of deals are a decision that both you and the student agree on, saying what reward they will get if they have good behavior. Behavior can also be taught by shaping, shaping involves taking steps in showing good behavior. Shaping can be used to introduce functional practice or enforce to the one living.

Explain your behavior expectations using a model. In order for the rest of the students to understand when one of them has good behavior use them as an example. If you are dealing with a particular student use people of their age to teach the kind of behavior they should have. If you do this it will work even for the students meaning you will have achieved more. The students should take part in the program of improving their behavior by creating goals, preventing situations that could affect their behavior, assessing themselves and knowing how they should be rewarded for their excellent response. The behavior management program should also include the parents.
